Alaska, the Outdoor Enthusiast's Ultimate Playground
Published Friday, January 8th 2016 - Updated Wednesday, August 28th 2019People often ask what it is about Alaska that keeps drawing me back to the last frontier – Robert Service describes it best in his poem The Spell of the Yukon - "It's the great, big, broad land 'way up yonder, It's the forests where silence has lease; It's the beauty that thrills me with wonder, It's the stillness that fills me with peace."

I was first captivated by Alaska's beauty in 1999 while working aboard Celebrity Cruises M/V Mercury. During my seven years working on board for Celebrity Cruises I was fortunate to have spent three summers cruising Alaska. During those three seasons that wonder and awe I first experienced in 1999 never faded, and Alaska's beauty continues to thrlll me to this day. Since ending my cruise ship career in 2002 I have done a two-week trip through the interior of Alaska, and completed four Alaskan cruises.

I practice and preach the words of Dalai Lama - "Once a year, go someplace you've never been before." However, there are some places that have so much to offer that each return visit leads one to feel as though they are visiting for the first time, and for me Alaska is one of those places.

As an outdoor enthusiast, Alaska is my ultimate playground! I have hiked in Denali National Park, Fairbanks, Seward, Ketchikan, Skagway, Juneau, Sitka, and more. I have trekked Matanuska Glacier and the Juneau Icefield. I have rafted in Skagway, Juneau, and Denali, and canoed in Skagway, Juneau, and Ketchikan. I have kayaked in Ketchikan and Sitka, and cycled in Skagway. I have experienced the diverse wildlife from bears, caribou, and mountain goats to whales, sea lions, and bald eagles. I have seen Alaska by train, boat, RV, seaplane, helicopter, and cruise ship. I have glimpsed a little slice of heaven and keep wanting more.
